Continuation Betting (C-Betting)

I raised with AK but missed the flop. Should I make a continuation bet?

There are a few things to consider when making a continuation bet after you have missed the flop. The first thing to consider is the number of players. Obviously your continuation bet bluff will be more successful against a single opponent rather than two or three opponents. Second, you have to consider what type of player your opponent is. If your opponent is a calling machine or maniac it is less likely he will fold to a bet. If your opponent is a rock then he will most definitely fold unless he has a really strong hand. Obviously you want to make fewer continuation bets against a "caller" or "manic" and more continuation bets against tight players. Most Importantly, you want to consider the flop texture. Ask yourself is this a flop that my opponent is likely to have connected with. If your answer is no then I would suggest making a continuation bet. If your answer is yes I would suggest checking. Basically it comes down to reading what type of player your opponent is and putting him on a range of hands and deciding if that flop is likely to have connected with his range. Of course you are not going to be right all the time but nobody ever is. Poker is all about making more good decisions than bad ones and these few tips should help you do just that.
